Beyond the Headline: What a seized phone can establish in the video inquiry
The recording, custody trail, upload and alleged direction are separate propositions. Each needs its own evidence.

Bengaluru police said on October29 that preliminary evidence in the investigation of a purported sting video involving former chief minister Siddaramaiah did not substantiate the incident depicted. The Indian Express and South First report the police’s findings and the continuing inquiry. These are attributed preliminary conclusions, not a final court determination about every person linked to the recording.
The Indian Express reports that the original mobile phone allegedly used to record the video has been traced, recovered and seized. It has been sent for forensic examination, with the report awaited. Recovering a device provides an opportunity to examine authenticity and integrity; it does not mean that all forensic questions have already been answered.
Police said the people appearing in the video had been identified and questioned, some more than once. The recording was allegedly made in 2023 about an incident said to date to 2011. Investigators are examining that gap and reconstructing how the material moved from its recording to circulation on social media in September and October2026. The dates matter because an old recording can acquire a new political context when it is redistributed.
The reports describe anonymous online accounts and technical steps allegedly used to conceal uploaders’ identities. The Express also records a Delhi-linked device trail and the arrest and same-day bail of a person on October24. His reported account of instructions from another person remains under investigation. This Pulse does not convert that account into a finding of party responsibility or reproduce unproven personal allegations.
The distinction between recovering a phone and establishing a recording’s history is important. Investigators still have to connect the device, its contents, any transfers and the eventual uploads through documented evidence. A claim about one link cannot establish every other link. Publication of a preliminary police account also leaves room for later forensic findings and judicial examination to change the picture.
What could happen next
Analysis by the Pulse deskIf forensic work authenticates the relevant files, the next question is how they connect to the alleged incident and upload history. Authenticity of a file does not by itself establish the truth of everything said in it.
If forensic findings contradict the preliminary police account, that account must be revised. If they support it, responsibility for recording and circulation still needs evidence and responses from those implicated. What evidence would let the public evaluate each link without prejudging guilt?
