Election data: sources, definitions & coverage
Useful intelligence starts with a number you can inspect. Public results, reporting and our calculations remain distinct.
Current local elections
Nomination papers count submissions; applicants count people; final contestants count the published final field. A scheduled date does not establish completion. Partial totals describe recorded contests only. Rejection rates require matching units, scope and reporting cut-offs. A single remaining candidate is not labelled elected unopposed without a declaration.
Historical calculations
- Margin
- Winner votes minus runner-up votes. Margin percentage divides by votes for candidates, excluding NOTA.
- Vote share
- Candidate votes divided by the candidate-vote total. The denominator differs from all electors or all ballots cast.
- Electoral competition
- Effective number of electoral parties: the inverse sum of squared party vote shares. Each independent candidate is treated separately.
- Turnout
- Votes cast divided by registered electors, only where both are supplied. Rejected ballots and NOTA must retain the source’s treatment.
- Historical change
- Compared only for the same recorded seat and boundary version within the same house and state. Name similarity alone does not establish continuity. Party names are preserved; mergers and splits need explicit dated mappings.
Geography
Community digitizations are attributed and labelled with their vintage. A polygon is a visual reference, not a legal boundary certificate. Assam and Jammu and Kashmir require separate 2024 boundary versions; an older map is not used for those seats. Unmatched seats remain in the table.
Publication and corrections
Every corpus has a content hash and immutable archived version. Corrected inputs regenerate dependent pages. Dataset update dates reflect data changes, not page rebuilds. Source kind distinguishes official documents, republished/community tables and reported schedules.
